The Pickle Jar, A Short Film on ALVN
A Mother’s Love is Unimaginable Strength
When we think of love, the strongest and most sacrificial is that of a mother. This is true across all cultures. A mother has the depth of emotions that comes from millions of moments, and countless days spent raising a child. Her heart enlarges from the moment her child is held in their arms, chronicling each milestone until they grow into the adult they eventually become.
The Pickle Jar screenplay was optioned by A Lady’s Voice Network as our first short film because it felt refreshing launching on such a celebratory note to what’s unique about women. We also loved that the two main characters were played by Latina actors which shows the added struggle and sacrifice many immigrants make in the United States to give their families a better life.
The Pickle Jar short film also explores the tension between teenage daughters and their mothers, triggered by the need to detach and find their voices. Gabriela’s journey replicates every healthy girl’s journey on a path to maturity as they accept where they come from, embrace how it’s shaped them, and find the strength to become who they are supposed to be.
This is the first short film by Janelle Hernandez who played Gabriela excellently.
Lisa Hernandez plays Alma and is her real-life Aunt.
