When three girls ruthlessly harass an overweight teen, Sara, whom they nickname “Cerdita” (“piggy” in Sanish) Pereda, the director takes us into a world of introspection because we pause to wonder what part we play in body shaming, and hopelessness because we know how pervasive body shaming is. Indeed, there is social pressure placed on women to look a certain way, and it’s always skinny, or fit, or nothing above a size eight. The result are women calculating their self worth on a scale.
Piggy is a twisted tale that explores the consequence of body shaming that ingeniously subverts expectations for a positively titillating ending for horror buffs.
Spanish writer and director Carlota Pereda is amazing as a director. Through her skill in storytelling and the brilliance of the main actor, Laura Galan, who plays Sara, the audience is able to feel every pain, shame, and emotional trauma a victim of body shaming suffers in their psyche.
